Bangalore, May 17 : Allaying fears about the stringent Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) regime being practiced in the United States, an US official today called upon India to realise the need for protecting IPR, which played a vital role in research, manufacturing, trade and commerce.

''Patents, copyrights and trademarks can bring huge benefits to the software and life sciences industry in India and this is the basis on which the US engaged its partners in business and commerce worldwide. During each tour of US officials in the countries who are its business partners, the importance of IPR is stressed because IPR protected and connected industries have proved to be successful,'' US Coordinator for International Intellectual Property Enforcement Christian Israel said at an interactive session, organised by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce here.

Stating that he had held discussions in the last few days with top officials in Delhi about the importance of IPR enforcement and training of officials in this regard, he said the US Government believed in joint initiative with the Indian Government based on intellectual properties which allowed clean growth.

About apprehensions on awarding patents for traditional Indian products like Basmati rice and turmeric in the US, Mr Dominic Keating, US Attorney of Trademarks Office in New Delhi, said a second patent had been sought in the US for such products and it related to conducting research and development of the base products.

''This will help developing new products and biological activities and can be beneficial to the Indian companies as well.

Lot of work can be done in development of traditional products and protection will help the Indian industry as well,'' he added.

Earlier, BCIC Vice-President Venkat Kedia voiced concern about award of patents for products like Basmati rice and turmeric outside the country.
