RS passes Office of Profit Bill amid BJP walkout
New Delhi, May 17: The Rajya Sabha today passed the controversial 'Office of Profit' Bill amid a walkout by the Bharatiya Janata Party members after a division sought by a Trinamool Congress member was enforced.
The votes cast were 91 in favour and two against adoption of the Parliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Amendment Bill, 2006, after Trinamool Congress member Dinesh Trivedi from West Bengal insisted on a division before the motion could be adopted.
Earlier, Union Law Minister H R Bhardwaj, making a spirited defence of the Bill, denied that there was anything illegal or unethical in the Bill as claimed by the BJP members, including former Law Minister Arun Jaitley.
His remarks saw the Opposition BJP members rising to their feet in protest, until Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan assured the agitated members that the remarks would be expunged.
