NHRC seeks comments from Rajasthan on sex determination tests
New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) Taking suo motu cognizance of a news report about 21 doctors in Rajasthan being involved in sex determination tests, the National Human Rights Commission today sought comments within four weeks from the state government.
It has directed that a copy of the press report be sent to the Rajasthan Chief Secretary.
The Commission said if the report is true it raises a serious human rights issue concerning gender discrimination.
A number of women groups have been demonstrating and demanding immediate action against the accused doctors.
These groups have alleged that the State Government has failed in implementing the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1994.
The report said 19 of these doctors had agreed to abort foetus after sex determination. Three of these accused doctors were posted in the Chittorgarh Government Hospital, it added.
