UP issuing multi-purpose I-cards in border areas

Lucknow, May 16 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh government is working on a pilot project to issue multi-purpose identity cards to people above 18 yrs of age in areas bordering Nepal.

Informing the state legislative assembly in a written reply addressed to chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, state parliamentary affairs minister Mohd Azam Khan said a pilot project was underway in border areas to provide I-cards to Indian citizens above 18 yrs of age. The Chief Minister was not present in the house.

He said the porous international border was being monitored even as the intelligence wing of UP police had been provided with special cells.

He said this year, 27 people, including five terrorists, had been killed in UP in terror-related incidents. ''Inspector General of Lucknow and Gorakhpur zone have been entrusted with the job of monitoring the international borders.'' The question was asked by Narenda Kumar Singh Gaur (BJP).
