United Students, RAWs to observe black day

New Delhi, May 16: The United Students' along with the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and Delhi Traders and RAWs will observe Saturday as 'Solidarity Day' in support of the agitating doctors and medical students.

Engineering students from five institutes-- Jamia Millia Islamia, Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), Delhi College of Engineering (DCE), Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT) and IIT-- are also expected to join the agitation within the next ten days.

United Students member and NSIT Students' Union leader Honey Arun said the engineering students will join the agitation as soon as the examinations are over.

''Our administration is not with us.... we can not leave the examination mid-way. We will soon join the medical students,'' he added.

CAIT today extended support to the students, agitating against the Government proposal to increase to 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions.

Representatives of RWAs led by United Residents Joint Action (URJA), which networks with over 500 RWAs across Delhi, extended support to the on-going students movement against reservations, a statement said today.

Members of the Bharat Uday Mission are also expected to participate.

''This is a national movement now. We appeal to people from all walks of life to support and join us,'' Adityaraj Kaul of the United Students' said.

Addressing a joint press conference, CAIT president Praveen Khandelwal said the government's proposal on reservation was ''short sighted and fundamentally unfair''.

URJA Convenor Pramod Chawla said,''the issues of social imbalance need not be addressed by harming other groups.'' ''The crumbling edifice of governance is sought to be propped up by short term and dangerous short cuts by the government.People have seen through this game and will not support degenerate policies like caste-based reservation,'' he added.
