Strong quake off Sumatra, no major tsunami seen
WASHINGTON, May 16 : A strong earthquake today struck off the west coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no risk of a major tsunami.
The magnitude 6.8 quake struck 270 km southwest of Sibolga on the northern island of Sumatra at 10:28 pm 2058hrs ist the USGS said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake was not expected to trigger a major tsunami, but could result in a smaller one within 100 km of the epicenter.
