Panaji, May 16 (UNI) In a bid to tide over the acute shortage of government doctors, particularly anaesthetists in Goa, the government has decided to recruit them directly on a contract basis by removing them from the purview of the Goa Public Service Commission (GPSC) with immediate effect.

Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane, after a Cabinet meeting today, said the government had also not accepted the recommendation of the GPSC on the recruitment of six assistant agriculture officers following alleged violation of the criteria of selection.

The government has further decided to appoint a special agriculture officer to encourage cultivation of oil palm in a big way. It was now grown on 800 acres yielding mere 2 tonnes per acre as against 26 tonnes in other states, he said.

The Cabinet has also decided to extend the second State Finance Commission and the chief engineer's term for one more year, Mr Rane added.
