Lucknow, May 16 (UNI) The Mulayam Singh Yadav government today came under scathing attack from the Opposition during discussion on motion of thanks to the Governor's address.

The discussion, which was initiated yesterday by the treasury bench continued today with the principal opposition BJP, and the BSP attacking the state government for what they termed as its ''overall failure.'' Leader of the opposition and BJP legislature party leader Lalji Tandon said the list of state government achievements mentioned in the address was a mere eyewash aimed at befooling the common man.

Charging UP with failing on all fronts, he said while the crime graph was spiralling, communal violence was taking its toll on the secular fabric of the society.

To highlight the law and order problem, Mr Tandon narrated an incident where an SP was beaten up by juniors in his office. Mr Tandon also mentioned newspaper ads in Bundelkhand, in which dacoits have invited youth to join their gangs.

He alleged the Mulayam government was patronising criminals, who were behind the murder of BJP MLA Krishnand Rai in November last year. He said Jeeva arrested by Delhi Police on Sunday has admitted that Independent MLA from Mau Mukhtar Ansari had asked him to eliminate Rai.

Incidentally, Ansari is supporting the state government.

Mr Tandon claimed the industrial development in the state was moving at a very slow pace, while the state has registered an increasing number of unemployed.

The BJP leader slammed the Centre and the SP government for poor target achievement in wheat procurement. ''The Centre and the state government will have to share the blame for this.'' BSP legislature party leader Swami Prasad Maurya expressed similar sentiments and maintained the common man was the bigest sufferer in terms of poor law and order.

Congress, however, chose to attack the previous BJP government for the poor power situation in UP. Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Pramod Tiwari said the major part of the blame lied solely on the BJP for the power crisis. He also appreciated the UP government for killing a number of dacoits in a short period.

Although an outside ally of the SP-led government, Congress had been at loggerheads with the state government on various issues.
