Vadodara: Night curfew continues in just Panigate

Vadodara, May 16: As a precautionary measure, night curfew will continue to be enforced in Panigate area of the city from 2200 hrs to 0600 hrs till further orders are issued by the authorities, police said.

However, with further improvement in situation, authorities today lifted curfew from city police station area.

And curfew was completely lifted yesterday from four police station areas -Raopura, Navapura, Karelibaug and Vadi- in the city as normalcy returned.

An indefinite curfew was imposed across half of the city on May one after violence erupted when a Corporation team accompanied by a police contingent began demolishing over 200-year-old dargah of Sayed Sarsiddin Baba to widen a road near Champaneri Gate.

Objecting to the demolition of the mosque, agitated residents of the area pelted stones at municipal staff and police, which in turn led to the baton charge, firing of teargas shells and finally gunfires.

Six people have been killed and more than 60 injured in the violence so far.
