Medical services badly hit in North-West

Chandigarh, May 16 (UNI) OPD services in almost all the government and private medical colleges in Punjab, Haryana and Union Territory of Chandigarh were again hit today following the strike by resident doctors, interns and students in protest against the proposed reservation policy of the central government.

OPD services at the Guru Nanak Hospital, SGPC run Guru Ram Dass Institute of Medical Services and Research and other medical institutions in Amritsar were severly affected as resident doctors and college students continued with their chain hunger strike and took out a procession and burnt the effigy of Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh in protest against the reservation policy.

In Ludhiana, the OPD at Dayananad Medical College (DMC) was forced to shut down as students and resident doctors staged a demonstration outside the college premises and shouted slogans against Human Resource Development Minister (HRD) Arjun Singh.

Services at Lord Mahavira Homeopathy Institute and Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College were also affected. However, Christian Medical College (CMC) continued to function normally.

OPD services at PGIMS, Rohtak were affected as students and resident doctors went on hunger strike. Emergency services were however maintained as PGIMS authorities extended the summer vacations by a week and cancelled leaves of the doctors. However, few students, who belonged to SC and OBC category opposed the ongoing strike.

The emergency services in all government hospitals in Patiala were hit as doctors and paramedical staff went on strike on the second consecutive day, emergency services were crippled for about two hours in the two Government Rajindra hospitals. Students blocked Patiala-Bathinda road and formed human chain for two hours.

At Chandigarh, students, interns and resident doctors blocked the OPD services at Government Medical College and Hospital. At the prestigious PGIMER residents doctors took out a procession, shouted slogans against HRD Minister Arjun Singh and boycotted OPD.
