Maoists using hightech 'boobytraps' to hit police

Visakhapatnam, May 16 (UNI) District police teams have unearthed 30 mines planted by Maoists on many highways in the Visakhapatnam agency area through which the police were expected to travel, district rural SP V V Srinivasa Rao said today.

Talking to newspersons here he said two policemen had a narrow escape while defusing the mines.

The land mines set by the Maoists targetting the police are also proving to be dangerous to public travelling on that route,+ Rao said.

The recovery proved that the Maoists were using the latest technology landmines. The police found more than 50 mines on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts. The Maoists replaced claymore mines with pressure mines wighing 350 grams to half a kilograme, he said.

The claymore mines were traced at Kumukumpudi in Gudem Kothaveedhi mandal on May 12.

This was the first time that claymore mines had been found. The police also fund 50 kg. of gelatin sticks from the Maoist dump, he added.
