China backs EU approach to Iran stand-off

Beijing, May 16: China today said it backed the European approach to resolving the Iranian nuclear stand-off and urged Iran to respond positively.

''China approves of the Europeans' important stance of striving to solve the Iran nuclear issue through peaceful negotiation,'' Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told a news conference.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said yesterday the European Union was ready to share the most sophisticated civilian nuclear technology with Iran if it agreed to halt uranium enrichment on its soil.
