Soma 13th, Sushmita 23rd in IAAF Combined Events Challenge

New Delhi, May 15 (UNI) Gold medallist in last year's Asian Championship in Korea, Soma Biswas came up with a below-par show to finish 13 while her Bengal colleague Sushmita Singha Roy stood 23rd in the heptathlon event of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge at Desenzano, del Garda, Italy.

Polish Karolina Tyminska won the gold totalling 6178, Ukrainian Hanna Melnychenko (5952) finished with silver while Italian Elisa Trevisan (5784) bagged the bronze in the Multistars yesterday.

Soma Biswas finished 13th with 5397 points while her state mate Sushmita Singha Roy (5118) stood 23rd among 26 athletes who finished the event, according to information received here today.

Soma could not come even near to her personal best of 6186, which she had recorded in Chennai in 2000.

Sushmita too fell short of her personal best of 5872 recorded here earlier this year.

European indoor finalist in the Pentathlon in Madrid last year, Tyminska overtook overnight leader Ganna Melnychenko after the javelin en route to a new Personal Best of 6178 points with an impressive 2:05.67 in the 800m.
