Thiruvananthapuram, May 15 (UNI) Caretaker Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today said there was no need for Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala to resign owning responsibility for the party's defeat in the Assembly polls.

Talking to newspersons here, he said Mr Chennithala was not responsible for the election debacle. ''In my capacity as the Chief Minister and the chairman of the United Democratic Front, I am taking full responsibility for the defeat,'' he added.

He was responding to the demand of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) yogam general secretary Vellappalli Natesan that Mr Chennithala should step down owning moral responsibility for the defeat.

He said the KPCC executive which would meet here on May 25 would analyse the reasons for the UDF debacle.

The question of the Congress-Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) merger would also be discussed at the meeting. ''There is no confusion within the Congress over the issue of entering into an electoral understanding with the DIC(K),'' he added.
