Shimla, May 15 (UNI) The students of government medical colleges at Shimla and Tanda in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh today protested against the Central Government's proposal of 27 per cent quota in educational institutions and threatened to resort to indefinite strike unless the quota proposal was dropped.

The medical students, junior resident doctors and resident doctors of Indira Gandhi Medical College held a demonstration outside the HP Secretariat here and urged the government to drop the quota proposal.

The agitating doctors later submitted a memorandum addressed to the President and Prime Minister through Governor V S Kokje, demanding reservation on the economic basis alone, saying that the policy was not helping the poor and the needy.

Talking to UNI here, a resident doctors spokesman, on condition of anonymity, said the doctors were not against the policy ''per se'', adding that it should only be on the economic basis alone.
