Mishaps claim 16 lives in UP today

Lucknow, May 14 (UNI) At least sixteen people were killed in accidents in different parts of Uttar Pradesh today.

In Mirzapur district, four members of a family, including three children, drowned in river Ganga. Police said here Usha Dubey had gone to the Ganga ghat for bathing her three children.

When the family was taking a bath, Deepak (10) reached the deeper part of the river. In a bid to save him, the rest of the family members entered the danger zone and drowned.

The deceased included Usha, her daughters Chandrakala (18), Vandana (12) and son Deepak.

In Kannauj, six persons, including five minors, were killed after being buried in a mudslide this morning.

Kannauj SP Prashant Kumar told UNI over phone that the incident took place at village Chandwahar when a group of villgers had gone to collect mud.

While the villagers, including some women and children, were digging mud, a part of it fell on them. By the time villagers and police personnel could pull them out, six those trapped had died of suffocation. The deseased have been identified as Bitoli (45), and five children including four girls.

Four labourers travelling in a tractor-trolley were killed in the small hours today when a speeding truck rammed against their vehicle in the Panki area of Kanpur.

The labourers, working as assistants in a marriage band, were returning home when the incident took place. Six others injured in the mishap were rushed to a nearby hospital.

The truck driver is absconding.

Meanwhile in Bahraich, two motorcycle-borne youths were crushed by an incoming Tata Qualis SUV. The two died on the spot.
