Landslide kills 11 Indonesian diggers

JAKARTA, May 14 : Eleven diggers who were trapped under a pile of sand following a landslide at an unauthorised sand-digging location in western Indonesia have died, police said today.

The workers were digging a hill on the outskirts of the West Java capital of Bandung when an avalanche of sand and gravel came down on them yesterday.

''The evacuation process finished this morning. We found 11 diggers, all of them have died. Three others were injured,'' senior police officer Suryana told Reuters.

''All the victims are men. The youngest was 19 years old, the oldest was 50.'' A similar slide in March killed 12 diggers and left two others injured.
