Cricket-Rain washes out West Indies one day international

Written by: Staff

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, May 13: The sixth one-day international between the West Indies and Zimbabwe was abandoned with no result after steady rain in today.

Runako Morton's second one-day century had guided West Indies to 263 for six off 50 overs and Zimbabwe, chasing a revised target of 191 in 30 overs, were 72 for two in 12.1 overs when the second stoppage forced umpires to end play.

It was the second time in the seven-match series that there has been a no result, following the washout of the third game in Guyana.

West Indies hold a winning 4-0 series lead ahead of tomorrow's final match at Queen's Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.

Rain first interrupted the match after two overs of the Zimbabwe innings but the visitors made good progress following the resumption an hour and 25 minutes later.

Brendan Taylor, with 20 off 21 balls, and opener Vusi Sibanda (18 not out) had offered encouragement to Zimbabwe, who were scoring at nearly six runs an over when rain ended the match.

Earlier, Morton made 109 off 150 balls, striking 12 fours and a six, before holing out to deep mid-on off seamer Anthony Ireland.

West Indies scored at five runs an over for most of the first half of their innings but were then kept in check by spinners Ryan Higgins and Prosper Utseya.

Ramnaresh Sarwan weighed in with 54 and added 134 for the second wicket with Morton before Zimbabwe started their fightback.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul contributed a breezy unbeaten 51 off 44 balls and Carlton Baugh chipped in with 23 to help boost the West Indies total with an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 57 in the last 5.1 overs.

Higgins, who finished with two for 39 off 10 overs, had earlier removed Sarwan and captain Brian Lara with the help of catches by wicketkeeper Taylor.

Sarwan fell attempting a cut, while Lara, who made two, was trying to steer a delivery to third man.

Off spinner Utseya went wicketless, but his 10 overs cost just 35 runs.

Fast bowler Tawanda Mupariwa removed Chris Gayle in his opening spell of seven overs, in which he gave up only 12 runs, and finished with two for 41 off 10 overs.
