Kerala CM Oommen Chandy resigns

Thiruvananthapuram, May 12: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today submitted his resignation to State Governor R L Bhatia after the debacle of the Congress-led United Democratic Front(UDF) in the Assembly elections.

The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured a two-thirds majority with 98 of the 140 seats, results of which were announced yesterday. The UDF got only 42 seats.

Mr Chandy, who reached the state capital this morning after spending a day in his Puthupally constituency from where he was elected for the ninth consecutive term, went to the Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation to the Governor.

Talking to newspersons, Mr Chandy said he was asked by the Governor to continue as caretaker till the next government is formed.
