High level inquiry ordered into killings of two people

Imphal, May 12 (UNI) The Manipur government has announced a high level probe into the alleged killing of two persons on May 8 at Churachandrapur by Assam Rifles.

The Joint Action Committee, which was spearheading a movement to press the government to announce a probe on the killing of vice principal of a school Shyamkanhai and Khangabok gram panchayat member Ranjit, has also decided to suspend its indefinite strike called in Manipur for the last two days.

Officials said the inquiry will be carried out by a police officer, not below the rank of DIG. It will also investigate antecedents of the two persons and the claim of the Assam Rifles.

The JAC said it will start its agitation again if the demands were not fulfilled. It demanded among others ex-gratia payment to the bereaved family members and punishment of the involved AR personnel.

Meanwhile, the AR, in a release, maintained the two killed in the encounter were the cadres of KYKL.
