Govt taking many steps for hosting Commonwealth Games in 2010

New Delhi, May 11 (UNI) The Centre is setting up institutional mechanisms for hosting Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Minister for Panchayati Raj and Youth Affairs and Sports Mani Shankar Aiyar told the upper house in a written reply that it was also recommending creation or upgradation of the venues for various disciplines and agencies involved.

Asked about training of sportspersons for the Games, Mr Aiyar said that the Centre supports and supplements the efforts of state government and national sports federations for preparing/ training of Indian sportspersons/ athletes to win medals in international events.

''Although the present schemes/ resources already provide for training of Indian Sportspersons for Commonwealth Games, 2010, keeping in view the importance of the event, the government is holding discussions with various national sports federations to identify areas where additional assistance could be given to promising sportspersons,'' he said.
