3.88 million mobile subscribers added, teldensity 13.16

New Delhi, May 11 (UNI) The number of mobile subscribers continued to surge forward adding 3.88 million during April 2006 out of a total addition of 4.60 million subscribers increasing the teledensity to 13.16, the telecom regulator, TRAI said today.

During the month 0.73 million fixed lines including WLL users were added.

With the addition of 3.88 million mobile users in April 2006 the number of mobile subscribers touched 96.92 million as compared to 93.04 million in March 2006.

At the end of April 2006, the total fixed line telephone subscribers are approximately 47.50 million and mobiles have reached around 97 million making a total of 144 million subscribers in the country.

The tele-density went up from 12.73 at the end of March 2005 to 13.16.

Broadband connections have also started to grow steadily since 2006.

During April 2006, about one lakh connections were provided taking the total in the country beyond 1.4 million, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said.
