Aizawl, May 10 (UNI) Two school grils pooled in their pocket money to rescue an owl from poachers and handed over the bird to a animal rights activist here.

According to the Peoples' Animal Group (PAG) activist C Luri when the two high school girls, Lalrin Pui and Zorampari heard that a barn owl had been trapped and put up for sale in the local market, they used their pocket money to buy the bird and brought it to her.

''When I tried to repay them, they did not accept,'' Ms Luri said, adding that it was a positive sign that the younger generation was becoming aware about the need to protect wildlife in a state which had not even set up a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals despite by a Supreme Court ruling.
