Flintoff calls for emphatic win over Sri Lanka

Written by: Staff

LONDON, May 10 (Reuters) Captain Andrew Flintoff today said England had put last year's Ashes euphoria behind them and were determined to record a convincing win over Sri Lanka in the three-test series starting at Lord's tomorrow.

Flintoff, captaining his country for the first time in a home test after taking over from the injured Michael Vaughan in India this year, said fans were still talking about last year's 2-1 series victory over Australia.

''But at some stage we have to move forward,'' he told a news conference at Lord's.

''We want to be the best side in the world so we have to start winning series. We want to win emphatically and we want to win well.'' Flintoff said he would discuss the composition of the XI with coach Duncan Fletcher this evening.

He said the pitch for the earliest test staged in an English season had a ''bit of green'' but he thought the weather would play more of a role than the pitch surface.

Flintoff, whose all-round performance in India was vital in his untried team's comeback to square the three-test series, said he was enjoying captaincy and had no problems deciding when he should bowl.

''I bowl if and when I should, I bowl if and when I'm needed,'' he said. ''My body is fit.'' REUTERS DH KN1810
