Aizawl, May 10 (UNI) The Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) has named the younger brother of Chief Minister Zoramthanga as the main culprit behind the alleged compensation scam in the suspended Tuirial hydel project here.

According to the statement issued by the MPC, V L Chhuana, the younger brother of the Chief Minister, had claimed compensation for 26 persons.

''Of Rs 7,94,82,000 sanctioned so far by the Centre, V L Chhuana has collected Rs 2,15,33,450, which is only 50 per cent of his claims'', the statement added.

The statement further said the number of compensation claimants had drastically increased from 48 to 988, when the Mizoram government extended the period of claim in 2001 by the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) government.

MPC also alleged that V L Chhuana and his family received Rs 215.33 lakh, while the rest was divided among the other claimants, who were more than 1000.

The Tuirial hydel project had been suspended by NEEPCO for not being able to meet the compensations demanded.
