Storm kills two in HP
Shimla, May 9 (UNI) At least two people were killed and several injured after a thunderstorm followed by heavy rains hit Himachal Pradesh, plummeting the day temperatures even as the high altitude areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba experienced mild intermittent snowfall last night.
A 30-year-old lady identified as Kirana and her daughter Seema, four, were buried alive after a factory wall collapsed on their temporary hut in the industrial area of Baddi in Solan district due to the thunderstorm.
The deceased were residents of Chattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh and were visiting their relatives when the incident occurred.
Three other people, identified as Ajit, Satish and Chiranji All, were also injured in the incident.
Strong winds also damaged overhead electrical wires in Arki, Pawanoo and Nalagarh areas of the district.
Solan Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Kumar said SDMs and tehsildars have been asked to prepare a report on the losses in the district due to last night's thunderstorm, while announcing an immediate relief of Rs 15,000 to the next of the kin of the dead.
District Superintendent Enginner Surya Kant Singh said efforts were on at war footing to restore power in the areas that were disrupted due to thunderstorm.
A report from Bilaspur district said the entire district was lashed by rains and gales accompanied by hailstorm for three hours last night, providing relief to people from the scorching heat.
