One held for smuggling heroin
Chennai, May 9 (UNI) Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs seized 270 gm of heroin worth about Rs 30 lakhs in the international market from a Colombo-bound passenger at Anna International Airport here on May seven.
In a release here today, Chennai Airport Customs Commissioner C Rajan said the officials were maintaining surveillance over passengers departing by the Colombo-bound Sri Lankan Airlines flight when they intercepted Subramanian Suresh (24) moving about in a suspicious manner.
During interrogation, he admitted to swallowing 80 capsules containing the narcotic substance. The capsules were later recovered.
He was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.
Mr Rajan said this was the third such instance in recent times where the narcotic substance was attempted to be smuggled by way of swallowing capsules. In October last and February this year, about 190 capsules were recovered from two passengers who had swallowed them.
