Ocean Development Ministry renamed Earth Sciences Ministry

New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) The government today renamed the Ministry of Ocean Development as Ministry of Earth Sciences and approved the creation of an Earth Commission to put implementation of policies on a mission mode.

The decision was taken by the Union Cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The renaming of the Ocean Development Ministry will enable an integrated approach on issues concerning water, global climatic change, environment, meteorology, seismology and related earth sciences, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters.

Mr Kapil Sibal is the Minister for Science and Technology and Ocean Development, which will now be called the Ministry of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences.
