Hardi, Chhattisgarh, May 9 (UNI) The Chhattisgarh government has launched a massive campaign in villages for resource mapping and micro-level planning and to review the progress of various development and welfare schemes.

During the 11-day 'Gram Suraj Abhiyan'(Village governance campaign), which took off yesterday, officials will visit nearly 20,000 villages in 9,820 gram panchayats to hear the problems, review the progress of various development and welfare schemes and to gather data for micro-level planning.

Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh, who visited Hardi village in Janjgir-Champa district, told newsmen the campaign was aimed at reaching out to the villages to gather a first hand information about the resources available and the needs of respective villages.

Besides, it is also aimed at reviewing the functioning of various ongoing development and welfare schemes, he added.

''We may not be able to fulfill all the requirements of the villages'', he said, adding the effort was to identify the needs of specific villages and to incorporate them in the action plan being prepared for implementation during the next three years.

''It's a big task. Our government has shown the courage to personally meet the people in 20,000 villages and collect applications regarding their various demands'', the Chief Minister said, adding it would be a success even if the government was able to fulfill 50 per cent of it.

Mr Singh, who was accompanied by Chief Secretary R P Bagai, said the Gram Suraj team, during its visit to the villages, were collecting all data including on development works, rural employment, roads, health, education, public distribution system and mid-day meal programme.

During the campaign, the Chief Minister will make unscheduled halts at few villages in all 16 districts.
