Rae Bareli polls: Samajwadi Party leader shot at

Rae Bareli, May 8: Jaishanker Vajpayee, a senior ruling Samajwadi Party leader, was shot at and wounded in Amava area while polling was on in the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency today.

SP media in charge of the constituency Rajesh Chandra told reporters at the district hospital that Jaishanker Vajpayee, along with another party leader Dinesh Singh caught hold of 15 ''outsiders'' campaigning for Congress at Narai polling booth in Maharajganj area.

''They handed over two of them to police...later, when they were returning, Vajpaye was shot at near Guhanna by three armed men wearing 'gamcha','' Chandra alleged.

While Dinesh Singh escaped unhurt, Vajpayee was rushed to the district hospital.

He is stated to be out of danger with a gunshot wound on his left arm.
