Violence erupts in Panigate, Army rushed
Vadodara, May 5 (UNI) Army was rushed to the curfew-bound Panigate area after violence broke out between two communities near the Ajawadi Mills late tonight.
Police sources said mobs belonging to the two communities indulged in a heavy stone-pelting, violating the curfew that was reimposed in the area from 1730 hrs, after a three-hour curfew relaxation for women and children, today.
Police which immediately reached the spot, resorted to lathicharge and lobbed three teargas shells to disperse the mobs. No one was reported injured in the incident.
A posse of Army jawans patrolling in the neighbouring area, immediately rushed to the troubled spot and conducted the flag march.
It was the first incident of violence in 48 hours of Army deployment in the city.
However, earlier in the day, a place of worship was attacked and damaged by some miscreants leading to tension in the Akota area under J P Road police station that was out of the purview of the curfew.
Considering the improved law and order situation, the authorities this evening had decided to withdraw Army from Raopura and Karelibaug police station areas and continue to keep them in four other curfew-bound areas of Navapura, City, Wadi and Panigate till the situation becomes normal.
Police sources said a combing operation had begun in the area and details were awaited.
