Madurai, May 6 (UNI) Door-to-door canvassing in the towns and villages, bicycle processions and rallies marked the conclusion of the high-voltage campaign for the Assembly elections in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Candidates of the dominant Dravidian parties, the ruling AIADMK and the opposition DMK, and their allies undertook hectic campaigning to woo the electorate.

Adding colour to the otherwise lacklustre election scene, were the film personalities, who descended on this backward region to campaign for the respective parties they are identified with.

Notable among them were actor-directors K Bhagyaraj, Vijaya T Rajendhar and a host of others paraded by the DMK and popular actor Sarath Kumar, Vijayakumar, S S Rajendran and an army of silverscreen stars, including little known ones, showcased by the AIADMK.

While Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is seeking re-election from Andipatti, her predecessor and AIADMK strongman O S Panneerselvam is trying his luck from nearby Periyakulam.

Ms Jayalalithaa as well as DMK president M Karunanidhi, firebrand orator MDMK General Secretary Vaiko and the leading lights of both the alliances had traversed the length and breadth of the southern districts during their campaign.
