Mumbai, May 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today stressed the need to strike a fair balance between ensuring equity and pursuing excellence.
In his address at the 66th convocation of the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) here, Dr Singh said, ''I sincerely believe that we must strike a balance between 'doing good and doing well. And between ensuring equity and pursuing excellence.
To focus on one and lose sight of the other cannot serve the interest of either of the organisation for which you work or society at large''.
The Prime Minister said his government would like to see each of educational and welfare institutes functioned within these parameters- be it schools and colleges' hospitals, municipal and panchayat organisations.
He said people working in these organisations must have a sense of compassion to care for their clientele and the ability to ensure that they do their job well.
