PUCL files PIL in Meerut fire tragedy

Allahabad, May 5 (UNI) Peoples Union for Civil Liberty (PUCL) today filed a PIL in Allahabad High Court seeking an impartial inquiry in to Meerut fire tragedy by the Uttar Pradesh Human Rights Commission.

A bench comprising Justice S R Alam and Sudhir Agrawal asked the standing counsel to seek instruction in the case by May 8, 2006, when the court hears the case.

The PIL claimed that No Objection Certificate (NOC) to hold the trade fair at the Victoria Park, Meerut was not obtained by the organisers and there was no arrangement to avoid such an accident.

The petition also demanded interim compensation for the dependents of victims.
