HC summons attorney gen on EC appointment issue
New Delhi, May 5 (UNI) The Delhi High Court issued notice to the Centre and asked the Attorney General(AG) to appear before it on May 17, to clear its stand on appointment qualifications for the post of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner.
After hearing the preliminary argument on a PIL filed by advocate Ravi Prakash Gupta, a division bench headed by acting chief justice Vijender Jain asked the Attorney General Milon Bannerjee to explain the omission in the constitution, to specify the qualification to these constitutional posts.
The PIL pointed out that retired bureaucrats are appointed to these posts and they cannot be removed without following the procedures, for the removal of a Supreme Court Judge.
The government should amend the constitution to prescribe qualification for these posts, the petition said.
