Written by: Staff

Kolkata, May 5 (UNI) The Dalit Samannay Samity(DSS), a city-based NGO for the backward classes, has welcomed the Centre's decision to reserve seats for the backward classes in higher education.

Congratulating Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for initiating such a bold step, DSS president and former Vice-Chancellor of Kalyani University Basudeb Barman, MP, and its general secretary Nitish Biswas in a letter to the Prime Minister said this would go a long way in upholding ''social justice in the society''.

They said, '' On behalf of the Dalits, we strongly support you for the well justified steps in respect of reservations in higher education for the OBC. '' The DSS also hailed the government initiative towards the reservation policy in private sector enterprises, the letter said.

Incidentally, nationwide protests broke out, particularly among the medical students, against the government initiative towards reservations in higher education forcing the Union Human Resources Ministry to relook into the issue.
