An absconding convict finally lands in jail

Patna, May 5 (UNI) Additional District and Sessions Judge of Patna Hiralal Singh today sent Ashwini Kumar Singh alias Mahant Ashwini Kumar Das, an absconding convict of life imprisonment, to judicial custody.

Acting on fresh warrant issued by the same court, local police had arrested the convict and produced him before the judge during the day.

The CBI, investigating into the case, produced Mahant before the special judge as one of its witness of prosecution side in the Brij Bihari murder case.

During cross examination, an accused of the case Mantu Tiwari identified Mahant, who was absconding since 2003, as a convict in another murder case.

Mantu had identified Mahant and informed it to Additional District and Sessions Judge Ramniwas Prasad through a petition.

Later the judge directed Mantu to file an affidavit in which he disclosed that Mahant was a convict in a murder case and sentenced to life imprisonment by a local sessions court in 1987.

Mantu had killed his co-villager Lakahn Singh on Holi in 1979 at Dhandauti village under Masaurhi police station area.

Singh was caught during the trial of a murder case of former Bihar Science and Technology Minister Brij Bihari Prasad. Brij Bihari Prasad was shot dead in Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) of Patna in 1998.

The CBI had produced Mantu as its 25th witness in the case.
