IT techie arrested for cyber crime

Written by: Staff

Kolkata, May 04 (UNI) In the city's first case of cyber crime, a software developer was arrested from Salt Lake for allegedly harassing counsellors of an NGO with obscene e-mails.

According to police, the accused Surajit Pal had been remanded to police custody for a day by an Alipore court. Police has lodged a case against Surajit under Section 354 of IPC (outrage of modesty) and Information and Technology Act 2000.

Pal used to dial a tollfree helpline of an NGO in South Kolkata and discuss his 'sexual frustrations' with the female counsellors.

He talked about these problems, though he had none of these.

"Soon the counsellors realised that Pal was faking and tried to dissuade him politely, but to little success. Pal kept calling and then the counsellors refused to entertain his calls," Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department) Gyanwant Singh told reporters.

Peeved by the rebuttal, a frustrated Pal shot an obscene e-mail on Januray 17 to the NGO's e-mail address with the names of the five counsellors, who had identified themselves earlier during the initial counselling, Mr Singh said.

On March 25 he sent a second e-mail with nude pictures with the names of the counsellors on it, he said.

The NGOs initially suspected that someone from their own office was playing a prank and tried to locate it. But having failed to reach the bottom, they approached the Lake Police Station.

An FIR was lodged and and the case handed to the cyber-crime cell of Kolkata police. Police traced the Internet Protocol Numbers (IPN) of the fake ids to an IT Office in Salt Lake and a cyber cafe in Central Kolkata.

The rest was simple. Yesterday, Surajit Pal was arrested and he admitted his crime during interrogation.

A resident was Seerampore, he was currently staying at Sovabazar in central Kolkata with his maternal uncle. Police said since he was booked under the cyber crime act the punishment could be up to five years' imprisonment and a hefty fine with it.
