Malappuram, May 4 (UNI) The family of a Keralite, languishing in a Saudi prison even after being exonerated by the Highest Court of that country in a murder case, has sought the Centre's intervention for his immediate release.

Aboobacker, 36, a resident of Thirurangadi in the district, was acquitted on March 23 by the Saudi Supreme Court in the murder case of an elderly person. He, however, continued to be in prison due to inadequate support from the Indian Embassy, his wife Sahira Aboobacker told reporters here.

''The Embassy has not taken any favourable step'' to secure his release despite being approached several times by Aboobacker's relatives in the Saudi capital since the Supreme Court verdict three months ago, she said.

A copy of the verdict, ordering his release, was produced before the embassy but officials demanded an English translation to proceed further in the case, she alleged.

Aboobacker was booked seven years ago on a statement made by an Indonesian housemaid that the poison consumed by the elderly person was procured from a departmental store, where he was employed.
