US assure cooperation to Nepal
Kathmandu, May 3 (UNI) Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Richard A Boucher has assured Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala of US cooperation for democratisation, peace and development efforts of the new government.
During a meeting with the Prime Minister, Mr Boucher said the US will support the political process of the Himalayan kingdom in accordance with the wish of the people.
''I have arrived here at the time of the exciting developments in the country that have attracted world's attention,'' he said.
''Through their efforts for democracy, the people of Nepal have won a great victory for themselves and for future generations,'' he added.
Now, it is up to the reinstated parliament, in close contact with the people, to lead the way forward to form an effective, responsive, and lasting democratic government, and to chart a way forward to ''bring peace to your country'', Mr Boucher said.
Talking about his meeting with senior Nepali officials and political leaders, including Prime Minister Koirala, he said, '' We have stressed America's long-time friendship with Nepal and its people, and the US interest in doing whatever it could to assist Nepal as the country moves forward into what we all hope will be an era marked by peace and economic development.'' The US had earlier said, ''the people of Nepal demonstrated their widespread support for democracy in recent weeks. We salute their determination and success in creating the conditions leading to the reinstatement of Parliament.'' Meanwhile, Norwegian Minister of International Development Erik Solheim arrived here last night for a four-day visit to the mountainous nation.
Mr Solheim is scheduled to meet Mr Koirala, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister K P Oli, leaders of various political parties and civil society representatives, during his stay in Nepal.
He will also discuss the economic cooperation and democratisation process of the Himalayan nation.
Norway had suspended aid after the king take over the power last year and has announced resumption of aid after the reinstatement of the House.
