HC requests AIIMS Medical Superintendent to appear

New Delhi, May 3: The Delhi High Court today requested the Medical Superintendent of the AIIMS to appear before it on May 11 to reply to the queries on the petition of a minor child, who had been allegedly afflicted with HIV-positive during blood transfusion in the hospital.

Justice Vikramjit Sen in his order said, ''The MS of premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is requested to be present in person on May 11.'' The nine-year-old son of a BSF official was afflicted with cancer while his father was posted in 2001 at Pokhran nuclear site in Rajasthan, said Counsel Anand Grover.

He had undergone blood transfusion at a Rajasthan government hospital and 35 times in the AIIMS in 2001.

The contention of the child in the petition was that he might have contacted HIV desease during the transfusion of blood at the AIIMS.

''Let the ghost be out and the premier hospital was allegedly morally and legally culpable for the disease,'' observed the court.

The case was extremely important for the public keeping in mind the rapid increase of AIDS and HIV patients in the country, said Justice Sen.

Mr Grover submitted that the AIIMS should provide the details of the doners from whom the blood was transfused to the child. ''One of the doners might be an HIV patient and the hospital transfused the blood without testing it.'' The Counsel appearing for the AIIMS refused to divulge the details saying that the doners' details could not be provided to the petitioner.
