Ten fold increase in KVI exports envisaged by 2011

Hyderabad, Apr 28 (UNI) The khadi and village industries commission has set an export target of Rs 400 crore in the next five years vis-a-vis the present Rs 40 crore, Mr C Chandran, Chief Executive Officer and Commissioner for Khadi and Village Industries said today.

The KVIC, under the Ministry of Agro and Rural Industry, has proposed to get recognition as an Export Promotion Council (EPC) and the formal approval from the Union Ministry of Commerce was awaited, he told reporters.

Earlier, inaugurating an all India technical workshop and exhibition on rural engineering industry, he said the RE industries had huge potential to generate rural employment on a large scale in both agriculture and non-farm sectors and to contribute for social up-liftment.

He said more than 2.3 lakh units were established in the country and the volume of production reached Rs 1861 crore last year.

Schemes like Gramodyog Rojgar Yojana and Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI) were being implemented to tap the potential of industry.

To provide common facility centers and infrastructure to the KVIs over 100 clusters would be developed around the country, he said.

While 25 clusters would be developed each for Coir and Khadi, 50 clusters would be dedicated to the village industries. The Kv industries would be encouraged to participate in more and more international exhibitions to popularize KV products in international markets, he said.
