Remove new riot-tainted Gujarat DGP: Cong

New Delhi, Apr 28 (UNI) The Congress today demanded the immediate removal of the newly-appointed Gujarat Director General of Police P C Pande as the IPS officer had a ''tainted tenure'' as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner at the time of the 2002 riots.

Taking serious exception to Mr Pande's appointment as DGP, AICC Spokesman Rajiv Shukla said it was highly inappropriate on the part of the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat to appoint a person with such a track record.

The police official was heading the police force in Ahmedabad under the jurisdiction of which nearly 500 people had been killed in the riots, he said.

Mr Shukla also said Mr Pande had made self-contradictory statements while deposing before the Nanavati Commission.
