ORI procures rare palm leaf manuscripts
Tirupati, Apr 28 (UNI) The Oriental Research Institute (ORI) of Sri Venkateswara University here has procured ancient palm-leaf manuscripts from M V Bhaskaran, a temple priest at Thiruvur in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu.
According to the ORI, the manuscripts in 72 bundles had added to the impressive 65,000 plus manuscripts in its possession.
The manuscript collection was passed on for several generations in Bhaskaran's family. ORI, coming to know of this, contacted him, and he readily agreed to part with them for safe-keeping.
The manuscripts had been given a fresh coat of chemical preservative and dried in the sun before being taken up for study.
ORI Research Director V Venkataramana Reddy said the manuscripts included rare works and commentaries on the Upanishads, Megasandesha, Sringara Naishadam, Mantra Shastram, Rama Rahasyopanishat, Madhaveeyam, Siva Ashtothara, Gayatri Kavacham.
