Opposition unite to pre-empt Congress move
Guwahati, Apr 28 (UNI) Seven opposition political parties, led by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today closed their ranks to emerge as a single bloc to pre-empt any bid by the Congress to form the next government in the event of its emergence as the single largest group.
The AGP and CPI today orchestrated the new strategy and emerged as a bloc so that in the case of the election throwing a hung assembly, they are regarded as one bloc and invited to form the government before the Congress.
The opposition held the meeting in a local hotel inviting the media to be a witness so that in post secnario, they are regarded as one bloc.
''We have shared seats and fought the election together and are now on the brink of winning the historic election, we are reasserting that we would remain together come what may'' said AGP President Brindabon Goswami, the convenor of the meeting.
The meeting was attended by CPI, Samajwadi Party, BPPF(r), ASDC, TGP besides AGP. The CPM(I), which would not be a part of the future government, had given its for the move.
CPI leader Pramode Gogoi recalled the 1981 situation when the Congress formed the government despite having less than required numbers. ''This should not be allowed to happen again,''he said.
