SC permits withdrawal of PIL for CBI probe

New Delhi, Apr 28: The Supreme Court today permitted the withdrawal of a PIL seeking CBI inquiry into the use of bulldozers by the district officials over the dead bodies of victims of Meerut fire tragedy where over 50 people were charred to death on April 10.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Mr. Justice C.K. Thakker dismissed as withdrawn the petition filed by Anil Karanwal, an advocate, and told him to approach the high court.

The state government of Uttar Pradesh has already ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident by a sitting high court judge.

A devastating fire had broken out in the local trade fair.

The petitioner had also sought directions to deduct the compensation amount from the salaries of the officials responsible for the negligence.
