78% electorate cast vote in third phase of polling in Bengal

Kolkata, Apr 28(UNI) About 78 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the third phase of West Bengal Assembly elections yesterday continuing with the trend of high polling in the first two rounds.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Debasish Sen today said, in all, 2,360 polling booth out of a total 13,790 recorded more than 85 per cent polling in Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas districts.

However, the Election Commission did not order repolling in any of these booths after a thorough verification of relevant documents.

The percentage of polling was 80 per cent in the first phase and 81 per cent in the second, elections for which were held on April 17 and 22 respectively.

Though the percentage of polling was recorded at 70 per cent at 17 00 hrs, the deadline for casting votes, long queues of voters in front of many booths forced the process to continue through late evening.
