Two students drowned in Bhakra canal
Fatehgarh Sahib, Apr 27 (UNI) Two students of Regional Institute of Management and Technology, Mandi Gobindgarh, drowned in Bhakra Canal near Sounda Head village in this district, police sources said.
The mishap occured yesterday when three students in aplayful mood developed a chain to fetch water from canal in a bottle, but one of them slipped his foot and subsequently all the three got in the current of the canal.
BBA fourth semester student Simran Singh, a resident of Nabha and BCA sixth semester student Parminder Singh, a resident of Khanna, were drowned in the canal while Harmanjit Singh, BCA sixth semester student, a resident of Machiwara, was rescued with the help of some villagers.
Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Shive Kumar Verma and RIMT Director, Dr B S Bhatia, alongwith college students and staff members reached the spot. The SSP said that police was locating the bodies of drowned students .
Mr Hukam Chand Bansal, Chairman of RIMT Group of Institutes, expressed grief over the tragedy. He said that institute would remain closed tomorrow.
