Tremors shake Sofia at start of NATO meeting

SOFIA, Apr 27 (Reuters) A mild earthquake measuring 3.7 rattled Bulgaria's capital today as foreign ministers from NATO member states began a meeting in the Balkan country, witnesses said.

Its epicentre was in the southeast of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, or in one of its suburbs, Emil Botev, an expert at the geophysical institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Science, said.

''We suppose the tremor was a regular one, characteristic for this region. There are no reasons for concern,'' he told Reuters.

The quake shook furniture and rattled windows, witnesses across Sofia said, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.
