NCP against Mah govt's proposed liquor policy

Mumbai, Apr 27 (UNI) The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is against any new policy which would encourage consumption of liquor, party spokesman Ratnakar Mahajan today said.

Responding to questions at the party's weekly press conference, Dr Mahajan said the Maharashtra government has a department of prohibition whose primary job is to stop consumption of liquor.

The NCP is against any attempt to make the ''prohibition department into liquor encouragement department,'' he added.

The government was toying with an idea selling sealed liquor bottles through more outlets.

When pointed out that both the Excise and the Finance departments were held by party ministers, Dr Mahajan said since the government has put off the proposed move to allow more outlets for the sale of sealed liquor bottles, there was no need to stress the issue further.
